Workshop Facilitation

Effective facilitators are flexible.  They modify their small-group activities before and during use.

Effective facilitators are adaptive.  They modify their small-group activities along six critical tensions.

Effective facilitators are proactive.  Before using a small-group activity, they modify it on the basis of the charactistics of the participants and the purpose of the activity.

Effective facilitators are responsive.
They make modifications during the small-group activity to keep the different tensions within acceptable range.

Effective facilitators are resilient.  They accept whatever happens during the small-group activity as valuable data and smoothly continue with the activity.

The following is an example of Anton's work within a Facilitated Discussion session.

Title:   Where to from Here?
Duration: 1 hour (or as required) including question time

This discussion is designed to give all crew members and attendees the opportunity to comment on the areas of safety that are important to them, including the reduction in the injury frequency rates.

Not only are employees given the ability to comment, but also they are surveyed (anonymously) for their opinions, and they are asked to answer a range of questions that will demonstrate:

• What they think are the main reasons for the improvements in the injury frequency rates,
• If they are committed to the continuation of these improvements and
• What level of the organisation has been most influential in the improvements (employee, supervisor or management levels)?

Following the surveying, all responses are displayed and discussed by all attendees.

The final part of the session requires crew members and attendees to answer two questions:

1. What is required to continue the reduction of the injury frequency rates in FY08, and
2. What will they do personally within the next 6 months to assist with the further reduction?

Note that employee names are included with the answers to these two final questions.

Interactive survey technology (Keepad) is used to both survey attendees and to allow the survey results to be displayed and discussed during the session.

Attendees are able to anonymously understand how the entire group is answering each question.

The presentation is tailored entirely to meet your company's requirements and situation.
