3 ways to turn around a team in turmoil

I am a leadership coach, and I help leaders to develop high performing and psychologically safe teams. Fortunately, most of the work that comes our way, is to help teams who are already high performing. To help them become even higher performing. On the odd occasion, we still get the call, we get the request, from a leader who has a team in turmoil.

As a leader, one of the most challenging situations you may encounter is having a team that is not performing up to its full potential. However, every setback presents an opportunity for growth and improvement. In this blog, we’ll explore three top tips to help you transform your underperforming team into a high-performing and motivated force.

Let’s dive in – and these are the steps we will work through with you if you need some support to improve your team’s performance!

1. Understand the root cause – what is really happening?

The first step in addressing poor team performance is to diagnose the root cause. Take the time to assess the situation carefully and objectively. Consider factors like communication barriers, conflicting goals, inadequate resources, or any other issues that might be hindering your team’s progress. Encourage open and honest feedback from team members to gain valuable insights into their challenges and frustrations. By identifying the underlying issues, you can develop targeted strategies to address them effectively.

2. Develop a clear vision and goals – what are we trying to achieve?

One of the most significant influences on team performance is having a clear vision and well-defined goals. A team without a clear direction can quickly become demotivated and disengaged. As a leader, it is your responsibility to communicate a compelling vision that inspires and unites your team. Set achievable yet challenging goals, breaking them down into smaller milestones that provide a sense of progress and achievement. When your team knows where they are heading and understands how their efforts contribute to the bigger picture, they will be more motivated to perform at their best.

3. Invest in professional development and support – what does our team really need?

Your team’s performance is heavily influenced by their skills and knowledge. Invest in their professional development to enhance their capabilities and confidence. This can be achieved through workshops, training sessions, mentorship programs, or access to relevant resources. Moreover, provide ongoing support and guidance, fostering a culture of continuous learning and improvement. Demonstrating that you genuinely care about your team’s growth will foster loyalty and dedication amongst team members.

Bonus Tip: Foster a positive and supportive team environment.

A positive work environment is vital for team morale and productivity. Encourage collaboration, open communication, and constructive feedback. Recognise and reward team members’ efforts and accomplishments, reinforcing a culture of appreciation and recognition. Celebrate successes, no matter how small, and learn from failures as opportunities for growth. A supportive and empathetic leadership style can significantly impact team motivation and overall performance.

Remember, transforming an underperforming team takes time and dedication. As a leader, your role is to impact, influence, and inspire your team members to reach their full potential. By understanding the root cause, providing a clear vision, investing in professional development, and fostering a positive work environment, you will be well on your way to cultivating a high-performing team.

Stay committed and patient, and you will witness remarkable improvements in your team’s performance.
