Building Resilience: Three Ways Leaders Can Empower Their Teams
Resilience is not about coping through boom events. Though most people think that it is.
Resilience is developed prior to, and following boom events. Research now shows that the more resilient you are, the better you handle the boom events (coping). And the better you come out the other side of the boom event (post-traumatic growth, versus post-traumatic stress.
Resilience is a key skill in 2024, and the more that leaders can foster that, the better off their teams will be.
If you are looking for a definition of resilience, it is “advancing despite adversity” (credit: Jurie Rossouw).
Especially after the last three or four years of our lives, resilience has become a vital trait for teams to thrive and succeed amidst challenges. As leaders, we play a crucial role in cultivating resilience within our teams.
Here are three key strategies to empower and support our team members in developing resilience (to both prepare for, and to grow through, boom events):
1. Encourage Growth Mindset
One of the fundamental aspects of resilience is having a growth mindset. As leaders, we can foster this mindset by encouraging our team members to view setbacks as opportunities for learning and growth. Emphasise the importance of perseverance and continuous improvement.
Celebrate failures as stepping stones to success and highlight stories of resilience within the team. By promoting a growth mindset culture, we empower our team to bounce back stronger from setbacks.
2. Provide Emotional Support
Resilience is closely linked to emotional well-being. As leaders, it’s essential to create a supportive environment where team members feel valued and understood. Take the time to listen actively to their concerns, empathise with their challenges, and provide constructive feedback.
Encourage open communication and promote a culture of trust and psychological safety. By offering emotional support, we help our team members build the resilience needed to navigate tough situations with confidence.
3. Promote Work-Life Balance (as much as possible)
A key factor in fostering resilience is maintaining a healthy work-life balance. Encourage your team to prioritise self-care and set boundaries between work and personal life.
Promote flexible work arrangements when feasible and encourage time off for rest and rejuvenation. By supporting work-life balance, we enable our team members to recharge and come back stronger, better equipped to handle challenges in the workplace.
Building resilience is a continuous journey that requires commitment and effort from both leaders and team members. By implementing these strategies, we can create a resilient team that thrives in the face of adversity and achieves remarkable success.
