Elevating Accountability: Three Strategies for Leaders
Accountability is a challenge for some leaders. Both taking personal accountability (and responsibility – see my post last week on Extreme Ownership) and creating accountable team members. I’ve written about this before, with a RACI (responsibility, accountability, consulted, informed) lens, though this newsletter is more about the culture of accountability, not the process or the system of accountability.
Yes, accountability is cultural. For it to be a real element of leadership, it needs to be simply part of ‘the way we do business here’. Accountability is a mindset, as much as it is a system. Systems are important, though so are mindsets (beliefs and values).
When accountability it is a mindset, it will become engrained in behaviour.
So, how do you create more accountability with your team.
1. Set Clear Expectations
Clear communication is the cornerstone of accountability. As leaders, it’s imperative to articulate expectations clearly from the outset. Ensure that each team member understands their roles, responsibilities, and the desired outcomes of their work.
Clearly defined objectives provide a roadmap for success and leave little room for ambiguity. Regularly revisit these expectations to ensure alignment and address any evolving needs or challenges.
2. Establish Metrics and Milestones
Accountability thrives in environments where progress is measurable. Define key performance indicators (KPIs) and establish measurable milestones to track progress towards goals. Encourage transparency by making these metrics visible to the entire team. Regularly review performance against these benchmarks and celebrate achievements.
Additionally, provide constructive feedback and support to address any gaps or obstacles hindering progress. By creating a culture focused on accountability (and continuous improvement), you empower your team to take ownership of their performance and drive results.
3. Lead by Example
I seem to use these three words a lot … 😊
Leaders set the tone for accountability within their teams. Model the behaviour you wish to see by holding yourself accountable to the same standards expected of your team members.
Demonstrate reliability, integrity, and a commitment to excellence in your own work. When faced with challenges or setbacks, take responsibility, and demonstrate resilience in overcoming obstacles. Additionally, foster an environment where accountability is valued and recognised. Celebrate individuals who consistently demonstrate accountability and encourage peer-to-peer accountability within the team.
In summary, accountability is not just a buzzword; it’s a fundamental aspect of effective leadership. By setting clear expectations, establishing measurable metrics, and leading by example, leaders can cultivate a culture of accountability that drives success and fosters growth within their teams.
I invite you to share your thoughts and experiences on fostering accountability within your teams.
Together, let’s continue to inspire and empower one another to elevate our leadership practices.
