Elevating Your Career: 3 Key Considerations Before Pursuing a Promotion
A lot of the leaders that I coach are trying to progress their career. And rightly so. Career aspiration is a positive aspect of the journey for a vast number of our team members, and leaders. Some people are not looking to climb the ladder of corporate success. Which is cool, too. I coach both types of leaders.
If you are in the wanting to get promoted group, before you submit your application for that coveted promotion, here are three crucial considerations to keep in mind:
1. Self-Assessment and Skill Development
Before you even think about pursuing a promotion, take an honest look at your current skill set and performance. Assess your strengths and weaknesses, objectively. Are there any gaps in your knowledge or abilities that you need to address to excel in this new role?
Consider seeking out additional training, attending workshops, or pursuing certifications to bolster your qualifications. Even consider a tertiary qualification (yes, this is still important – for the next 5 – 10 years at least, in my humble opinion – after that, I’m not so sure…).
Remember that personal growth and continuous learning are key elements of career advancement.
2. Alignment with Organisational Goals
A promotion is not just about your own aspirations; it should also align with the goals and needs of your organisation. It should also align with the values of your organisation.
Take the time to research and understand your company’s strategic objectives and how your desired role fits into that bigger picture. When you can clearly articulate how your promotion benefits the organisation, you are more likely to gain the support of decision-makers.
Discuss your career goals with your supervisor to ensure that your ambitions align with the company’s trajectory.
3. Networking and Mentorship
Building strong professional relationships within your organisation can be invaluable when seeking a promotion. Seek out mentors or colleagues who have successfully navigated the path you aspire to travel. They can provide guidance, advice, and insights that will prove invaluable.
Additionally, consider expanding your network both within and outside your current workplace. Attend industry events, conferences, and connect with professionals who can provide different perspectives and opportunities for growth.
Remember, a promotion is not just about a title change or a salary increase. It’s a step forward in your career that comes with increased responsibilities, challenges, and expectations. Taking the time to prepare adequately can make all the difference in your success.
