Empower Your Team: 3 Ways Leaders Foster Action Orientation
As a leader, one gripe you may have will relate to the level of action orientation of your team members. Some will be high on the scale of action orientation, and others not so much. For those that don’t have a natural inclination to being in action, these team members may need additional support. To understand how important it is for team efficiency for all team members to be in action.
I get that there are times when we do some thinking, and there are times when you need to do some refection. At the same time, high performing teams are built on purposeful, process driven, people powered action. Action that comes with a commitment to completion, and to making the most of your time. Action with production.
Here are some ways you can create action orientation in your team.
1. Encourage Calendar Utilisation
Time is a non-renewable resource. Unlike other resources on planet earth, time is the one resource, that once it’s gone, it is gone. For ever. You never get it back. You can either choose to use it wisely, or you can lose it.
Calendar utilisation is the best and most efficient way to get into action (if you use your calendar properly, that is). Your calendar reflects how in control you and your team are. If you or your team are double or triple booked … or the opposite … there are vast amounts of empty space in calendars, there is an issue.
Your team should have their regular activities scheduled, they should not miss important deadlines, and they should be planning ahead. All using their calendar. The next time you hear the words ‘I’m too busy’ ask to see the person’s calendar, so you can work through it with them.
2. Encourage Proactive Problem-Solving
Getting into action is about understanding that problem-solving is a big part of making progress. As a leader, it’s essential to encourage your team members to approach challenges with a proactive mindset. Encourage them to focus on finding solutions rather than dwelling on problems.
Foster a culture where team members feel empowered to take ownership of issues and actively seek out opportunities to address them. Encourage brainstorming sessions and open discussions to explore various perspectives and potential solutions, backed up with action taking.
By empowering your team to tackle problems head-on, you are empowering them to get into action, and to keep making progress.
3. Encourage Empowered Decision-Making
Empowering your team members by entrusting them with autonomy and decision-making authority is instrumental in fostering an action-oriented culture. Provide them with the resources, support, and guidance they need to succeed, and then step back and let them take the lead.
Trusting your team demonstrates confidence in their abilities and encourages them to take ownership of their work. This will lead to increased self-confidence and your team feeling supported to make the decisions that need to be made. Taking action is never an issue when team members feel empowered, trusted and supported.
In conclusion, encouraging risk taking, problem solving and decision making, you’ll foster a culture of action that drives results and fuels continuous improvement. Remember, it’s not just about doing things—it’s about doing the right things, together.
