Enhancing Collaboration – 3 Strategies for Collaborative Leadership

When I’m talking to leaders about collaboration, I often remind them that it isn’t the fastest path to a decision but it is usually the best one. Collaboration takes time. It takes energy. And it takes a willingness to slow down long enough to genuinely hear the people around you.
To collaborate well, we need open minds. Minds that can say, “Maybe there’s a better idea than the one I’m holding onto.” Minds that stay curious rather than defensive.
From my experience, a truly collaborative leader is calm, connected, and deeply committed. Committed to listening, committed to learning, and committed to drawing out the wisdom that already exists in their team. Because when we do that, our decisions get better… and so do our relationships.
Collaboration at its best is inclusive. It’s facilitative. And above all, it’s honest.
Let me share three practical ways you can bring more collaboration into your leadership, based on what I see working with teams across Australia:
1. Foster Open Communication
One of the biggest shifts I see in collaborative teams is this: they talk openly. And I don’t just mean during formal meetings, I mean they speak up, they question, they share ideas, and they do it without fear of being shut down.
As leaders, we can set the tone for this kind of openness. When we genuinely listen, not just wait for our turn to speak, people notice. When we ask curious questions instead of giving quick answers, the energy changes in the room.
Try paying attention to how much you speak in meetings versus how much your team speaks. The more space you give them, the more you’ll learn… and the more collaborative your decision-making becomes.
2. Cultivate a Culture of Trust
Collaboration can’t survive without trust. And trust doesn’t come from grand gestures, it comes from the small, consistent behaviours that show your team they can rely on you.
When you follow through on what you say you’ll do… when you own your mistakes… when you give people room to take responsibility… trust grows quietly but powerfully.
And here’s what I’ve seen time and time again: once trust is in place, collaboration becomes the natural way of working. People contribute more freely, challenge more bravely, and support each other more willingly.
3. Embrace Diversity and Inclusion
One of the great privileges of leading is getting to work with people who think differently from us. Different backgrounds, different experiences, different styles. These differences aren’t obstacles; they’re assets.
When we invite a range of perspectives into our conversations, our decisions get stronger. When we genuinely value those perspectives, not just tick a box, our teams feel more connected and engaged.
You’ve heard me say it before: diversity isn’t just about who’s in the room, it’s about who gets heard. And as leaders, we have the responsibility to make sure every voice has space.
Collaboration isn’t a one-off activity. It’s a mindset, a practice, and a commitment. It takes effort, absolutely. But the payoff is enormous: smarter decisions, stronger relationships, and teams who feel empowered to do their best work.
As you continue your leadership journey, I encourage you to pick one of these strategies and start experimenting with it. See how your team responds. Notice the shifts. And keep reminding yourself that collaboration is a skill, one we can all continue to grow.
Wishing you all the best as you build more collaborative, connected teams.
