Leading for Development: Embracing Transformational Leadership
In 1978, James MacGregor Burns wrote a book titled “Leadership”. It is still the seminal work on the topic for many students of leadership and for leaders. It was a 530 page book, that won a National Book Award, and a Pulitzer Prize for the author. Some of the key concepts in the book were related to transactional and transformational leadership.
The concept of transformational leadership has been attributed to James V Downton from 1973. It is a leadership style that has been defined and described in a range of ways since then, and the concept (depending on who you talk to) is an outdated or ‘old’ or overused concept for leadership. I don’t agree with those opinions, because for me, it (like Maslow’s work from 1943) provides a simple and effective blueprint for how to do leadership the right way. In a way that is focused on leading for the development of the team, and team members.
In short, transformational leadership (and I encourage you to go and do the research), is about creating more leaders. It is about developing others. Plain and simple. I ask you now – how can that concept ever become outdated … Transformational leadership is not just a style; it’s a mindset that can inspire positive change and drive collective growth within an organisation.
Here’s how:
1. Empower and Develop Others
Transformational leaders understand that their success is intrinsically tied to the growth and development of their team members. Actively empower others by creating an environment that encourages autonomy, innovation, and continuous learning.
Invest in professional development opportunities, mentorship programs, and skill-building initiatives. When you foster a culture of empowerment and growth, you not only strengthen individual capabilities but also cultivate a high-performing team that can adapt to change and overcome challenges.
2. Inspire a Shared Vision
Great leaders are visionaries who paint a compelling picture of the future. To be a transformational leader, you must inspire and mobilise your team towards a shared vision. Clearly communicate your goals and aspirations, fostering a sense of purpose and direction.
Encourage open dialogue to ensure that everyone feels connected to the vision, creating a collaborative environment where innovative ideas can flourish. A shared vision unites the team and provides a roadmap for success.
3. Lead by Example
Authenticity is the cornerstone of transformational leadership. Demonstrate the values and behaviours you expect from your team members. By leading by example, you establish trust, credibility, and a positive organisational culture. Embrace transparency and vulnerability, acknowledging your own areas for improvement.
When your team sees you embodying the principles you advocate, they are more likely to follow suit. Your actions speak louder than words, and a leader who exemplifies the desired traits becomes a source of inspiration for the entire organisation.
In conclusion, transformational leadership is about inspiring, empowering, and leading by example. By empowering others, fostering a shared vision, and embodying the values you champion, you can create a dynamic and innovative workplace that thrives on positive change.
Wishing you continued success and growth.
