My 25-Year Anniversary … of a Near Fatal Workplace Incident

It is a big day, and my mum always rings on March 8, each year, just to say ‘thanks for being alive’ – all good mum, it is much preferable to the alternative (I think … not that I really know … and am certainly not ready to find out).

It is a big day for my dad, as he got a phone call to say I had been ‘electrocuted’ (fatally injured). He thought he was going to the hospital to identify me. That would suck …

It has been an amazing journey, and one that has included some massive ups, and some equally massive downs.

I think the main things that I learnt were:

  1. Don’t put a steel ruler in a switchboard (duh… bit like putting a knife in a toaster …)
  2. It is not what happens to you that matters, it is what you do with it, that is important

An obligation

I really feel that people, like myself, that have had a really crappy thing happen to them, have an obligation to share their learnings, to share their experience, so that others might avoid that very thing from happening to them. I take that obligation very seriously.

A reflection

This year also marks my 25th year wedding anniversary. That milestone is way more important than surviving the incident, believe it or not, because surviving didn’t take as much work as building a happy marriage has. My wife is one patient woman – she has been married to a serial entrepreneur forever, and that comes with its challenges.

I would love to read Julie’s reflection on our journey, and what that has been like for her … (or, maybe I don’t want to – it might be like “the gift of feedback”!!!

 A message

The key message here is that – your past does not determine your future. You can change the course of your life in a heart beat!

You need to just ‘get up, dress up and show up’.

The universe doesn’t really mind what happens to you, in fact it sends you some experiences, to see what you will do with them. And, it has a plan for us all.

It is only in the last few years, and thanks to a great mentor (Roy) that I have really come to understand that life doesn’t happen to us, it happens for us, so that it can work through us!!!

What has changed your life, to make you who you are today?
