Personal psychological safety is critical for leaders in 2022

For the past two to three years, I have worked in, written about, and talked about psychological safety with leaders everywhere. We have helped leaders create psychologically safe teams. And, physically safe teams… psychological safety goes hand in hand with physical safety. And when we talk about physical safety, one of the big discussion points is PPE (personal protective equipment). PPE keeps workers safe. But what keeps leaders safe? What keeps them safe psychologically? Leaders are required to create safe teams, but how are they looking after their own safety.

Leaders need to take charge of their own mental state. That is not always easy. Especially when they are under pressure. I am going to contend that PPS (personal psychological safety) is to leaders, as PPE is to workers.
