Professional Development Goals for Leaders: Examples to Inspire Growth

I’ve been thinking a lot about this lately. As someone who spends my life helping leaders and teams grow, I know how easy it is to get caught in the day-to-day and forget to stop, breathe, and set clear goals. Not goals that sound good on paper. But real, personal ones that make you better — and make your team better too.
Why leaders need professional development goals
I’ve seen it far too many times: leaders with great technical skills but no plan for how they’ll improve their leadership skills. And without that, pressure builds, mistakes happen, and team trust starts to erode.
If you’re asking yourself what you should focus on, here’s my answer: get clear, get simple, and pick goals that feel personal to you. The ones that make you uncomfortable — those are probably the right ones.
Examples of professional development goals that actually work
Let me share a few of the goals I’ve worked on myself and encouraged leaders to set.
1. Be calm under pressure
This one’s close to home for me. I learned this the hard way after nearly losing my life in a workplace incident. Since then, I’ve worked hard on conscious control — staying steady when things get tough. If this resonates with you, I’ve written about ways leaders can stay calm under pressure.
And honestly? It’s still a daily practice.
2. Communicate clearly and consistently
Ask yourself: do people really understand what I expect of them? Or am I assuming they do? I’ve made this mistake, and I bet you have too. Strong communication is about more than talking — it’s about listening, slowing down, and explaining things in a way that lands. You can also read my thoughts on meaningful leadership conversations.
3. Develop emotional intelligence
We don’t lead robots; we lead people. And those people are watching how we react. Whether we lose it, whether we stay composed, whether we show empathy. I’ve worked with countless leaders who struggle with this. Start small. Be curious about your team’s reactions. There’s more about this in my article on leading with emotion.
4. Delegate more (and better)
Let go of the idea that you need to do everything yourself. You don’t. And when you do, you’re holding your team back. Start by picking just one task you can hand over this week. And make sure you explain the why behind it.
5. Prioritise your own learning
We ask our teams to grow, but are we doing the same? I’ll admit, I sometimes push this aside. But every time I make space for learning, I show up as a better leader. If you’re feeling stuck, I wrote about how to restart your personal development.
How to start setting goals you’ll actually stick to
Start simple. One goal. One action. And write it down. Stick it on your desk or set a weekly reminder in your phone. The small stuff adds up.
Also — talk about your goals. Share them with your team. Not as a brag, but to show that you’re working on yourself too. I’ve found that this builds trust faster than anything else. If you’re not sure where to start, I encourage you to reach out to me. Sometimes, just talking it out helps you find clarity.
There are plenty of great ideas out there. here’s a simple guide to help you frame smarter goals. If you’d like more examples to spark ideas, this list of leadership goals is a great read.
Before you go
There’s no one-size-fits-all. But I’ll tell you this: the best leaders I’ve met are the ones who stay curious, stay humble, and keep learning. If you’d like to explore how we can help with that, we also offer leadership coaching and workshops that make a real difference.
