The Willingness, Responsibility and Action Pyramid!
Coaching leaders is the most rewarding, challenging and interesting task I have ever undertaken during my career. It is all of those things, and more, on so many levels.
The one thing that I struggle the most with, though, is when leaders (or even team members – who I also work with) either don’t want to change (grow) or they don’t feel they need to. Now, it is worth understanding that I work on the premise that every single person (me included – and I get coaching, too) can change and improve their results and outcomes. So, to think that you won’t, or can’t, change is against my way of thinking completely, and let’s unpack this a little further, as willingness to change is only part of the process of inaction.
Imagine, if you will, a pyramid with three words in the pyramid, with willingness on the bottom, responsibility and action at the top!!! Here is the thing … and everything starts at the bottom of the pyramid…
Firstly, we need to be willing to change (willingness)
Secondly, we need to take responsibility for our actions (including the 50% share that we have been responsible for, in relation to our current situation)
Thirdly, we need to take action to change (and not just say we are going to act)
What does this really mean, though?
In short, if you are not willing to change, coaches can’t help, leaders can’t help – the only person that can help you is you, and it is time to have a good look at yourself, if your willingness is low!
Let’s presume for the sake of the argument that you are willing to change. Then, it is time to really (honestly and deliberately) unpack what you need to keep doing or stop doing, by taking responsibility for what you have been doing in the past that has got you to where you are now. Remember, your current position is only a result of all of your previous behaviour. If it has served you well, don’t change much, if it hasn’t, you might want to look at opportunities for improvement and behaviour modification.
Then, when you have decided what you can take responsibility for, it is time to act.
What are you willing to take responsibility for and what action will you take???
