Before we think about where leadership starts, let’s think about where it finishes. I don’t think it ever does finish. Leader in work, leader out of work. Leaders are always on show. People are always looking at you.
But every finish has a start point.
Though I don’t think leadership has one start point. I feel like it’s a constant starting and restarting process. Whether it is getting over a failure or starting a new day. Or starting a new process.
Here is my simple answer to the question of where leadership starts.
When you decide to make a difference.
Let me explain.
1. You have to lead, when you want to matter
If you want to make a difference on planet Earth, there is no option. You have to lead. Lead others. Lead by example. Lead the charge. Lead the team.
Leadership starts when you make the decision to do something great.
And now that you know that. You can be ready for the challenges that come with being a high achiever. The challenges that come with being a game changer. A mission maker.
So, how do you get started. That won’t be something that you do. It will be something that is done to you. Your passion will overtake you, and your purpose will push you. You will wake up one morning and start. And go you!
This is where leadership starts.
2. You have to lead when you want to change something
We have always done it like that.
It is just our standard process.
We can’t change it…
A good leader hears these phrases and is moved to action. A good leader hears these phrases and know that they need to change the status quo. A good leader hears these phrases and decides to make a change. A change for the better. A change to process. A change to procedures.
These phrases are an excuse not to take action.
Doing the same thing just because we have always done it like that is not a great option.
So, how do you get started. You know that if you are doing the same thing today as you were doing last year, your team or your business is going backwards. You are not growing. The only thing that is constant in life is change. When you notice that something needs to change, for the better, go after it.
This is where leadership starts.
3. You have to lead, even when you don’t want to
The biggest thing that I have learnt about leadership, and the biggest thing that I have observed working with leaders, and the biggest think that I have felt in relation to leadership is… some days I actually don’t want to do it…
And I don’t think I am unique. I feel like others would have the same experience. Some days, leadership just seems too hard.
But you don’t have a choice. It is like being a parent. You can’t choose not to parent today. Remember that leadership is second most important job on planet earth, after parenting.
So, how do you get started. You get up, you dress up, and you show up! You know that there are people relying on your ability to get over any lack of unwillingness to lead on any particular day. So, the days when it feels hardest are the days when leadership matters most.
This is where leadership starts.
