Where Leadership Starts

In his best-selling book (and 28 million view Ted Talk), Simon Sinek explains where leadership starts:

“In studying the leaders who’ve had the greatest influence in the world, Simon Sinek discovered that they all think, act, and communicate in the exact same way—and it’s the complete opposite of what everyone else does. Sinek calls this powerful idea The Golden Circle, and it provides a framework upon which organisations can be built, movements can be led, and people can be inspired. And it all starts with WHY.”
Start With Why: How Great Leaders Inspire Everyone To Take Action by Simon Sinek

If leaders can articulate their why, and align that with the organisation’s why, they will be better placed to engage their team and inspire them to greatness, and high performance.

Let’s take it a little further, though, because in my humble opinion, I think that leaders get many, many chances to “start over”. And, not only do they get chances to start over, but they need to keep the energy up, and continue to engage and inspire. Starting with why should be more than just a once off conversation …

Where Leadership Starts – Monday Mornings…

Leaders can use their why as a default position, during those times when the team needs energising. Monday mornings, month end or other stressful times, are perfect opportunities to either revisit the why proposition, or to build on it, and to be use it as a true north, and a reminder of what is important.

As a leader, you can even try lining your why up with your values, and why they are also important to not only what the team does, but also how it does it.

Where Leadership Starts – Internally…

And, regardless of whether it is Monday morning or Friday afternoon, leadership starts internally. Leaders that can control their emotional state, and be internally controlled, whilst outwardly focused, will be better placed to understand their team, and help them become the very best versions of themselves.

As a leader, this is about know that there is a band width of emotional variation that you should not deviate outside of. Having an upper and a lower control limit with your emotional state is called being emotionally intelligent, and knowing what your stressors are, and when and how to manage them when they show up. Leadership starts when you can really manage your emotional state!

Where Leadership Starts – With Care Factor…

Finally, the one thing I do know, and have experienced both as an employee, and as a leadership coach, is that leaders that show up to the role with a real and deep seeded care factor will be way more successful than those that don’t. Remembering that words are easy, and even cheap, it is easy to say how much you care, though it is a totally different thing to actually demonstrate it.

As a leader, please don’t be ‘too busy’ for your team, don’t miss the signs and the cues that show you they need you to be there for them, and certainly don’t miss an opportunity to ask them “are you ok”.

Be truly caring, not verbally caring.
