Why your DISC profile is more important than you might think

Fun fact – the same person who developed the character of Wonder Woman also developed DISC profiling. I know, how cool. Dr William Moulton was a psychologist, lawyer, and comic book writer. He was also an outspoken feminist and Moulton developed Wonder Woman as a model of what is possible for women to step into their power.

Prior to that, though, Moulton was focused on helping people understand and channel their emotions. It was ground-breaking at the time. And his book included a quadrant to describe the four different personality styles. At the time, they were called Dominance, Inducement, Submission, and Compliance.  But these days, we know these four personality styles as Dominant, Influential, Steady, and Conscientious. Aka DISC Profiling.

Let me start at the beginning…

What is DISC Profiling… really?

DISC Profiling is the simplest and most effective way to truly understand how you operate, how you communicate, and why. It is a tool that unpacks your pace and priority at work, and it helps you understand your natural working style, as well as your adapted style (how you are adapting to be successful in your current role).

The process… well it’s a simple online survey, that doesn’t take long to complete.

We use this DISC Profiling with our clients, and include it in our two day intensive leadership workshops, because it produces such an accurate and thorough analysis of their behaviour characteristics. In short, the report that you receive as part of the process explains how dominant, influential, steady, or conscientious you are. And why.

Our clients tell us they can’t believe how bang on their profiles are!

Let’s quickly unpack the meanings of each behaviour characteristic – Dominant people tend to be very direct in their communication. Influencers are the salespeople, or those with high people skills. Steadiness indicates a preference to teamworking, and contribution. And conscientious people are the details workers, who like numbers, data, and processes.

But why is that important?

DISC profiling is important because self-awareness and self-understanding is the first step in any leader’s journey. The quote “know thy self” has been around for a while now. And because DISC is psychology based, it allows you to understand yourself more deeply. When you unpack your profile with someone who is qualified to do so, they can give you an even more detailed explanation of the information provided.

On that note, please don’t do your DISC Profile unless you do unpack it with a DISC practitioner. It will create more questions than answers for you.

Even more importantly…

Not only does DISC profiling help you understand yourself, it teaches you to understand other humans, and why they do what they do. This is the big winner, and where our groups get the biggest aha moments.

The most important learning from DISC Profiling is how to communicate with other people. Especially others that aren’t the same profile as you. Now that is where the magic happens! And the space that it creates for you to break down barriers, get to know others and build better relationships.

When you understand yourself, and you understand others, your world changes.
