Dealing with a team member who goes boom when things go boom

Is there anything more challenging for a leader than a team member who is explosive, and who goes boom when the pressure comes on? This is a situation, not often covered in a blog, but covered a lot in coaching conversations… because it is real, it happens, and it needs to be managed. With control, of course. And care factor.
