Breaking the dependency on one skill: How leaders can broaden their skillsets
Some leaders are very good in one particular area of their role. They might be good at the technical work, or they might be good at the people work, or they might be good with clients.
The challenge is relying too heavily on a single skill can be a significant risk. While specialisation has its merits, overdependence on one ability can limit a leader’s effectiveness and hinder organisational growth. In this edition, we’ll explore strategies for leaders to diversify their skills and enhance their leadership capacity.
Recognise the Risk of Overdependence
Specialisation can be a double-edged sword. While excelling in a particular area can lead to short-term success, it may also create blind spots and vulnerabilities. Leaders who rely too much on one skill may struggle to adapt to new challenges or miss out on opportunities that require a broader perspective.
1. Solicit Feedback (do a 360 degree survey) and Act on It
Regular feedback is essential for growth and development.
Leaders should:
- Seek Constructive Criticism: Encourage team members to provide honest feedback on leadership performance. This can highlight areas where reliance on a single skill may be a limitation.
- Act on Feedback: Use feedback to identify areas for improvement and take concrete steps to address them. This may involve seeking additional training or adjusting leadership strategies.
- Set Development Goals: Establish specific, measurable goals for skill development. Regularly review progress and adjust goals as needed to ensure continuous improvement.
2. Embrace Continuous Learning
One of the most effective ways to combat overdependence is through continuous learning.
I encourage leaders to:
- Pursue New Knowledge: Enrol in courses, attend workshops, and read extensively on topics outside their primary expertise.
- Seek Mentorship: Connect with mentors who have diverse skill sets and experiences. Their guidance can provide new insights and broaden horizons.
- Participate in Cross-Functional Projects: Engage in projects that require collaboration across different departments. This exposure can help develop a more well-rounded skill set.
3. Cultivate Emotional Intelligence
Emotional intelligence (EI) is a crucial skill for leaders. It involves the ability to understand and manage one’s emotions, as well as the emotions of others.
Leaders can improve their EI by:
- Practicing Self-Awareness: Regularly reflect on personal strengths and weaknesses. This awareness can help leaders recognise when they are overly reliant on a single skill.
- Enhancing Empathy: Make a conscious effort to understand the perspectives and emotions of team members. Empathy fosters better communication and stronger relationships.
- Improving Interpersonal Skills: Focus on active listening, conflict resolution, and effective communication. These skills are essential for navigating complex interpersonal dynamics.
Conclusion
While being highly skilled in one area can be advantageous, a balanced and diverse skill set is crucial for effective leadership. By recognising the risks of overdependence, embracing continuous learning, cultivating emotional intelligence, fostering collaboration, and soliciting feedback, leaders can enhance their capabilities and drive their organisations to greater success.
