Dealing with leaders who go boom when things go boom

Leaders seem to be going boom more often. Or at least that is what our coaching clients are telling us. “When the pressure comes on, my leader loses it”.  

So, how do we coach our clients to deal with a leader who can’t create conscious control? Let’s unpack.  

The out-of-control leader 

Firstly, we need to understand what is going on for the leader who goes boom when things around them go boom. And these are both reasons, and rationale, but in no way excuses for their behaviour.  

Some leaders, as young or as old as they are, have never made the effort or taken the time to learn the skills of conscious control (aka emotional and behavioural control).   

Some leaders are born (or bred) in a way that predisposes them to going boom. For more information on personality traits like narcissism (a little overused in 2022) but a relevant term, just Google ‘The Dark Triad’ and see if your leader’s behaviour is listed there.  

Finally, some leaders just don’t care how they impact other humans. I have worked for one of these, and they don’t change their style easily. And no amount of feedback will change them.
