How do you keep your energy up as a leader?

So, you have run out of energy.

Hoomaning is taking its toll on you, and you don’t think you will be able to get through the day. You are doing all the right stuff (or not) like getting enough sleep and eating well. But you just can’t find the energy you used to have.

You always feel drained, or tired. You always feel like your leadership work takes more energy than you have, to dedicate to it. And you are running out fast. But then you look over at Jill or Jack, and they are just pumping. They seem to be in perpetual positivity, and they seem to have enough energy for whatever happens in their teams.

How can you emulate their energy levels. Or how can you get some of yours back. You know, that energy that you used to have when you were younger!

For me, I get asked this question a lot! How do you maintain your energy, and stay ‘up’ all the time? And it is not an easy one to answer. I don’t always feel up. But the one thing that keeps me more energised than 90% of the population is that I am on a mission ‘to leave people better than I found them’. Plain and simple. For me, when I am interacting, I am trying hard. I am pumped. And that is too much for some people. Which is cool.

As leaders, our energy serves as a catalyst for motivation, inspiration, and productivity, enabling us to guide our teams towards success. Let’s dive into the strategies that can help us keep our energy up and maintain our peak performance!

1. Prioritise Self-Care

Effective leadership begins with self-care. It’s crucial to prioritise your physical, mental, and emotional well-being.

Here are some essential self-care practices to consider:

Physical Fitness: Regular exercise, such as brisk walks, yoga, or cardio workouts, can boost your energy levels and release endorphins that enhance your mood and focus.

Rest and Recovery: Ensure you get adequate sleep and take breaks throughout the day to recharge. Nurturing your body and mind through restful activities, such as reading, hobbies, or meditation, is vital for sustained energy.

Nutrition: Fuel your body with a well-balanced diet, including fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins. Stay hydrated and minimise excessive caffeine or sugar intake, as they can lead to energy crashes.

2. Cultivate Positive Relationships

Nurturing positive relationships within your professional and personal networks can significantly impact your energy levels.

Consider the following strategies:

Supportive Network: Surround yourself with individuals who uplift and inspire you. Seek mentors, join professional communities, or establish peer networks to engage in meaningful conversations and exchange ideas.

Allocate and Collaborate: Empower your team by allocating tasks and fostering collaboration. Sharing responsibilities and leveraging the strengths of others, not only lightens your workload but also boosts team morale and energy.

Celebrate Successes: Acknowledge and celebrate milestones and achievements within your team. Recognising their hard work fosters a positive work environment and energises both you and your team to strive for continued success.

3. Embrace Purposeful Time Management:

Effectively managing your time allows you to accomplish tasks efficiently and maintain a healthy work-life balance.

Consider the following approaches:

Prioritise and allocate: Identify high-priority tasks and focus on completing them first. Allocate tasks that can be handled by others, freeing up your time for critical responsibilities.

Time Blocking: Allocate specific time blocks for different types of tasks, ensuring you have dedicated periods for focused work, meetings, and personal time. This approach helps you stay organised and prevents burnout.

Learn to Say No: Assess requests and commitments carefully and be comfortable saying no when necessary. Protecting your time and energy by setting boundaries is essential for maintaining sustainable levels of productivity.

Remember, leadership is a marathon, not a sprint. By implementing these strategies and prioritising your well-being, you will be better equipped to lead with passion, resilience, and sustained energy.
