How to develop Emotional Intelligence and why

In the 1920’s, the thinking was that your IQ determined your success in life and at work. In the 2020’s, it’s a different story. In 2022, your Emotional Intelligence (EI or EQ) matters. “In leadership positions, 85% of the competencies for success lie in the EI domain, rather than in technical or intellectual abilities” (Credit: Daniel Goleman).

With that in mind, what is it that you can do to develop your emotional intelligence? A lot is the answer.

There really are a range of tools that you can add to your toolbox that will allow you to stay in emotional control and get in rapport with other humans.

And although we have been doing training in the EI domain for many years, finally we are able to give you an accurate read on your level of EI. As part of our DISC profiling work, we now have a profiling tool that not only helps you unpack your EI but helps you to improve it.

And why is that important; because without EI, the quality of your own emotional experience, and the emotional experience of those around you won’t be as good as it could. And the relationships you have with yourself and other will suffer. Better EI, better emotional state, and better connections with other humans.

What I love about the profiling tool, is that it follows the Daniel Goleman model of self-recognition and self-management, and social-recognition and social-management.

For most people that I speak to, it is the social-management element of the EI model that is important.

Let me add as much value as I can by sharing the top fives skills of those that are high EI and that are great at social management (relationships) – and these are taken from the EI profiling tool:

1. Empathy, Sensitivity, Appreciation:

This skill is about understanding others; accurately picking up emotional cues from communication (including words, tone, and nonverbal signals); managing direct and indirect feedback effectively; being attentive, sensitive, aware and appreciative of the emotional signals of others.

2. Service, Compassion, Benevolence:

This skill is about operating with a sense of contribution; aiding, helping, coaching, and developing others; operating constructively to contribute to the emotional

states and benefits of others; recognizing needs, wants and desires; relating to alternative

thoughts, perceptions, and perspectives.

3. Holistic Communication:

This skill is about having the abilities to effectively send and receive information including

emotional content; listening; engaging and connecting with others; sending and receiving verbal and nonverbal signals constructively.

4. Situational Perceptual Awareness:

This skill is about recognizing and processing dynamic, shifting emotional data; communicating attention, focus, awareness, and connection; adapting to situational variables and changes; understanding which factors count, how much and responding with reasonable behaviour.

5. Interpersonal Development:

Growing and nurturing constructive connections; setting the tone for long term depth and breadth in relationships; working with quality in personal and professional relations; having resonance and rapport.

Looking at the above list, it is clear how these skills can help you be more successful not only at work but also out of work.

These are life skills that increase the quality of your life, and the quality of your interactions with others.
