Mastering Adaptability: 3 Essential Traits of Adaptive Leadership
“We fear change because it means that outcomes are unknown. Our brains are designed to find peace in knowing. When we don’t know what will happen, we make up scenarios and, in turn, create worry. Humans find it hard to move on when something known comes to an end.” (credit uopeople.edu).
Dealing with change is a major issue for a lot of people. Particularly leaders, who are forced to deal with the change. One of the TGG rated top 10 research reports (see https://theguineagroup.com.au/research-reports-on-leadership-2023/ for that list) explains that the major organisational change processes that used to be part of the senior leader portfolio, is now the role of line leaders.
In other words, leaders are every level of every organisation are being required to implement change processes more than ever. Sometimes, without the information required in relation to the change, or the skills roll out the change. Being able to change is about adaptability. Aka, adaptative leadership.
Adaptive leadership isn’t just a leadership style; it’s a mindset. It’s about being responsive, flexible, and forward-thinking. Here are three fundamental ways to cultivate and embody adaptive leadership:
Embrace Change and Uncertainty
An adaptive leader understands that change is constant. Instead of resisting it, they embrace it as an opportunity for growth. It is about understanding that change is inevitable, but growth is optional. Through every change process comes growth. A growth mindset is linked to an adaptive leadership style. They foster a culture that encourages innovative thinking, allowing their team to explore new ideas without fear of failure. By acknowledging uncertainty, they adapt their strategies, remaining flexible and agile in their approach.
Effective Communication and Collaboration
Communication is an essential part of adaptive leadership. Leaders must actively listen, engage, and communicate transparently with their team members. Encouraging an open dialogue creates an environment where ideas flow freely, enabling quick adjustments when needed. Collaboration across diverse perspectives fosters innovative solutions and helps in swiftly adapting to new challenges. Collaboration also reduces the impact of group think, which occurs when one voice (usually the most senior person in the room) makes all of the decisions (and others agree by nodding encouragingly).
Continuous Learning and Resilience
Adaptive leaders are lifelong learners. They constantly seek new knowledge, stay updated on industry trends, and truly embrace a growth mindset. Moreover, resilience is key. They understand that setbacks are opportunities to learn and grow stronger. By modelling resilience, they inspire their team to navigate challenges with grace and determination. The six areas of resilience that adaptive leaders model include vision setting, collaboration, tenacity, health, composure, and reasoning.
