The AI Safety Net: Using Technology to Remove Friction and Fear

Have you ever felt that cold spike of adrenaline when a new piece of technology is dropped onto your desk and you realise you have no idea how it actually works?
I’ve spent more than twenty years obsessed with safety. Not just the kind with hard hats and steel-toed boots, but the kind that happens inside your head. I know what it feels like when things go boom. My own near-fatal workplace incident taught me that fear is a terrible seatbelt. It doesn’t actually protect you; it just keeps you frozen in place while the world moves forward.
Right now, that world is moving towards artificial intelligence. I see the friction everywhere. People are worried about their jobs. They’re worried about looking stupid. They’re worried the “executive brain” is going to replace the human heart. I get it. But I also know that if we don’t build a safety net for this transition, we’re going to see a different kind of burnout.
The invisible wall of tech anxiety
When I talk to leaders, the biggest hurdle isn’t the cost of the software. It’s the fear of the unknown. We often see false expectations appearing real when a new tool is introduced. We imagine the worst-case scenario. We think the tech is out to get us.
I was thinking the other day about how we treat AI like a threat rather than a teammate. If a new person joined your team and they were incredibly fast but a bit literal, you wouldn’t fire them. You’d coach them. You’d set boundaries. That is exactly how we need to approach AI psychological safety. If your staff are scared to click a button because they might break something or worse, replace themselves you’ve already lost the battle.
The link between psychological safety and employee anxiety is becoming clearer every day. If the culture isn’t right, the tech will fail. Every single time. I believe that reducing friction starts with honesty. I tell my team: “I don’t expect you to be an expert. I expect you to be curious.”
Why we need a human centred approach
I’ve noticed something about how we adopt new habits. We tend to overcomplicate things. We think we need a massive strategy document before we can even start. But slowing down to speed up is usually a better way to handle digital change. You take one small tool. You play with it. You see where it rubs and you fix it.
I often say that we must master human skills to get the most out of ai. Empathy is a human skill. Accountability is a human skill. AI can’t do those things for you. It can give you data, but it can’t care about the person sitting across from you. If you’re a leader, your job is to be the emotional anchor while the tech does the heavy lifting.
People ask me, “Anton, isn’t AI just going to make us lazier?” I don’t think so. I think it’s going to make us more human. If I can use a tool to handle my admin, I have more time to be more empathetic with my staff. I can actually listen. I can show up. That’s the real safety net. It’s using tech to remove the grunt work so we can focus on the heart work.
Building your own AI implementation strategy
So, how do you actually do this without freaking everyone out? You start by leading with language. The way you talk about these tools matters. Instead of saying “We are automating this process,” try saying “We are giving you a digital assistant.” It sounds small, but how you use language as a leader changes the entire vibe of the office.
I’ve seen leaders mess this up by being too secretive. They test things in a dark room and then surprise the team with it on a Monday morning. That’s a recipe for distrust. If you want buy-in, you need to invite people into the mess. Show them the failures. Show them where the AI gets it wrong. It makes the tech feel less like a “perfect replacement” and more like a flawed tool that needs a human hand.
I also believe in moving from ideas to action as fast as possible. Don’t wait for the perfect moment. There isn’t one. The tech is changing every week. If you wait for it to settle, you’ll be left dusty at the starting line.
The role of the safety professional in the digital age
This is a big moment. We are seeing the evolving role of safety professionals right before our eyes. It’s not just about guarding machines anymore. It’s about guarding well-being in an automated world.
I’ve been researching how ai is changing workplace wellness. It can spot patterns of fatigue before a human can. It can predict when a team is about to redline. If we use this data with a care factor, we can prevent the kind of accidents that changed my life back in the 90s.
But be warned. If you use tech to spy on people, you destroy trust. And breaking the stress cycle requires a culture where people feel supported, not monitored. You have to be transparent about why you’re using the tech.
How I can help you find your feet
I’m passionate about this because I don’t want to see good leaders quit because they feel outdated. You aren’t obsolete. Your wisdom is more valuable than ever. The AI is the engine, but you are still the driver.
I’ve set up a new space specifically to help you discover ai and learn about ai leadership without the jargon or the hype. It’s just straight talk about how to make your life easier and your team safer.
If you’re feeling the friction, don’t just sit there and stew in it. I know what it’s like to struggle with change. But I also know that on the other side of that struggle is a smarter, faster, and more connected way of working.
