So, for context:
I was presenting a session in my home town of Gladstone, Queensland, recently, and one of the session participants pulled me aside at one of the breaks, and asked me the question ‘what state did they fly you in from (to present these sessions)?’
What are you talking about, was my reply, I live 10 minutes up the road! I drove here this morning …
What happened next was abit unexpected – she replied (in general terms, maybe not word for work), though fascinating on so many levels …
“But we are in Gladstone … all of the big businesses here fly people in to do work, because they think that if someone comes in from Melbourne or Sydney, they must be better trainers than we have here in town …
“I used to work for X major banking corporation’ she said ‘and it was just policy to fly someone in from interstate, as there was a perception that they were better training and presenters than anyone could ever be from the local area …
“It was almost an informal rule that you had to get an interstate presenter to deliver anything important, like people stuff or leadership stuff’.
Interesting, I thought …
Then, I actually agreed with her.
Seriously. I agreed.
I actually told here, that the scary part is – I am the person that other states fly in, to do work in their states – seriously – in the last month or two, I will have presented in both South Australia and Western Australia. I visited nearly every state and Territory in Australia to speak during 2018 …
Here are some points that I have reflected on, since that conversation:
- Most of my speaking and training work (for 15 years) has been based out of Gladstone
- I have got some amazing clients in this little town of ours, from small business to large enterprise, and for those, I am extremely grateful, and I genuinely appreciate your open mindedness and willingness to “not have to go interstate” to get great service – and, as you know if you have worked with us, we deliver a better service than you would get anywhere else
- Here is a shout out – to industries, and businesses, that are based in regional locations, open up your heart and mind to the fact that there are people in your local area that can do an amazing job for your business, and who will probably be more invested, and give you 1,000 commitment, given it is in their local area
Oh, and FYI, I don’t see this blog changing anything, really, and seriously I am not that fussed.
