Leading while away from family during the holidays

As a younger man, I had to work on Christmas Day, or on similar days during what should be family time for everyone. That was tough. It was hard to be at work, to really focus on what I had to do, and at the same time want to be home. Some people will have to work during this festive season. And some will handle that without too much trouble. Some won’t. That is where leadership comes in. To the leaders out there, you can really support your team members to get through those workdays where they may not be totally engaged in their work.

Leaders are the forgotten group in organisations. They hold the most important role in every business. Which is leading other humans. But there is an expectation that our leaders will just get up, dress up and show up. Like they always do. And there is an expectation that they will compartmentalise their own challenges and emotions (like working during the holidays) and support their teams. Like they do every other day of the year.
